The Journalism Research & Education Section has been completely restructured. The JRE section offers a new kick-off to the journalism world with a whole spectrum of innovative ideas as part of the current convergence of the field with intensive research and development (R&D) to embrace all aspects of the news business; integrating new journalistic methods with new publishing methods, new distribution methods and new business models.

In Stockholm 2008, a new theme was introduced, "International Collaborative Research in Journalism: New Challenges and Emergent Perspectives." It is both very important and timely to provide academics and practitioners across the global with real hands on experience & fresh insights of thinking journalism. Besides, this initiative will certainly help create opportunities for a real global horizontal network, while giving unlimited possibilities of significant contribution to further internationalization and integration of journalism studies and facilitating the dialogue between different schools of thought and regional traditions in studying journalism.

JRE aims to revisit the best possibilities of how to link between the convergence with training, vocational expertise and journalism research, with news media as an actor. As a result, the valuable research contribution of the section members could level the current parameters of journalism education, and what incentives (Material, motivational, usage, & skills) could be improved to enhance the current journalism quality with regard to its research & education.

As a result, the new vision of JRE will help provide modules of research project topics that focus on the interaction between sense-making and technical activities. Therefore, the suggested development emphasizes the ecology of Journalism institutions and journalism actors that shape the practice of the field of journalism that is no robust more than any previous time.

Within the current phase of communication, priority should be given through the JRE section to scope enlarge journalism studies & introduce more thematic studies of journalism that deal with  generic skills; identify performance indicators, criteria, and test procedures; assess students and journalism programs. Another priority of research should be given to the social organization of newsrooms, the role of new media, and explore the current challenges facing journalism industry and professional journalism.
